LEBANON

RAMADAN

Ramadan is an Islamic holy month celebrated by Muslims around the world. It is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad when Allah gave it's first chapters to him in 610. Fasting is obligatory for all adult Muslims. Fasting occurs from dawn until sunset and Muslims must refrain from eating food, consuming liquids, smoking and "sinful behaviors" that may negate the reward of the fast.

Although not all Lebanese are Muslims, the change in routine and the festive air is present around the entire country.

Pre-fast meals known as Suhoor occur before dawn and post fasting feasts called Iftar are eaten after dawn. Iftar is typically celebrated as a social gathering and food is served buffet style. The meal is made up of traditional dishes and desserts, some of which are only made during Ramadan. Usually, dessert is the most important course during Iftar. The feast is a time for families, friends & communities to gather together and breakfast
