THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is an American holiday celebrated on the 3rd Thursday of November every year. Many people trace the origins of this day to the harvest celebration the Pilgrims held in Plymouth,  Massachusetts in 1621.

However, their first true Thanksgiving was in 1623, when they gave thanks for rain that ended a drought. The main belief and tradition in America is that is was a feast that brought the pilgrims and Native Americans together to set aside differences and be thankful. George Washington, the first US president proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving day in 1789.

The tradition of this holiday is centered on coming together as a family and being thankful. Typically, families will spend the day cooking together, watching a football game, and sitting down to eat a large meal and discuss what all they are thankful for. Over time, various foods consumed on Thanksgiving have become traditional for the holiday and staples of the meal in homes throughout the country.
